Dell has just unveiled what it claims to be the world's thinnest tablet, introducing its new Dell Venue 8 7000.

Smartphones are already in a race to be slimmer despite their increasingly larger displays, and the challenge is even greater for tablets considering that they pack larger screens and batteries and bulkier components overall.

Not too long ago, Samsung was boasting that its new Galaxy Tab S was one of the world's slimmest tablets due to switching from LCD to Super AMOLED tech for its display. Sony also unveiled its new Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact last week at IFA 2014, introducing a swiftly thin 8-incher. While the Galaxy Tab S and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact measure 6.6mm and 6.4mm in thinness, respectively, the new Dell Venue 8 7000 is even thinner at 6mm.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 is currently on display at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2014. Instead of Samsung's Super AMOLED display on the Gaaxy Tab S Dell used OLED technology for its new gadget, but the tablet is nonetheless impressive. The 8-inch screen on the Dell Venue 8 7000 has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels and goes great with the new Dell Gallery app the company is also showing off.

"Introducing the Dell Venue 8 with Dell Gallery. The world's thinnest tablet features a gorgeous 8.4" OLED touch screen, depth mapping and smart albums that enhance and organize every amazing image," Dell touts.

"Capture every image in 2560 x 1600 resolution on a vibrant 8.4-inch touch display that's perfect for sharing all your favorite photos, videos and more."

The Dell Gallery app comes with a special feature - Intel's RealSense snapshot - which consists of new digital photography tech designed to create a depth map of an image. Simply put, this tech allows users to change the focus of a photo even after it has been taken, or measure objects in a shot. The result is similar to what the HTC One M8 can do with its Duo Camera system.

"Intel RealSense snapshot is an enhanced photography solution that creates a high-definition depth map to enable measurement, refocus, and selective filters with a touch of a finger," Intel further adds. "It will introduce new capabilities and new ways of using the tablet, opening up a new creative horizon for developers to come up with apps that change how consumers engage with their photos. For example, consumers can change the focus of a photo to different objects or foregrounds in editing. Objects within the photo can also be measured."

Dell has yet to offer full specifications for its upcoming Venue 8 7000 tablet, but we do know that the slate will be packing an Intel Z3500 processor under the hood. That means it will have a quad-core chipset clocked somewhere between 1.33GHz and 2.33GHz, depending on model.

According to Intel, this Android tablet will make its commercial debut in time for the holidays, so more details should become available shortly.
