The Sprint Galaxy Nexus is getting an update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but it's the last Android update in store for the device.

Google may have unveiled its latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, but the Galaxy Nexus will never get a taste of this new treat. The good news is that owners of this smartphone will at least get the latest Jelly Bean flavor.

"Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices," Google notes on a support page explaining why the Galaxy Nexus will not get Android 4.4 KitKat.

With no KitKat on the horizon, Galaxy Nexus owners might as well settle and be glad they'll get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Sprint has announced that it is rolling out the update over the air (OTA). The latest Jelly Bean version will roll out gradually over a "10-21 day period," notes the carrier.

Moreover, Sprint has also started rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for its Samsung Galaxy S4. Just as the Galaxy Nexus upgrade, the Galaxy S4 software bump will roll out gradually, but it should reach all users within the next few weeks.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will bring several neat features to the two devices. For the Galaxy S4, it will add some TouchWiz enhancements and support for Samsung's new Galaxy Gear smartwatch, among other goodies. Sprint has not offered a changelog for the Galaxy Nexus upgrade yet but you can learn more about the Galaxy S4 update from Samsung's support site.

If Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is not good enough for you and you want the very latest Android 4.4 KitKat, however, Sprint has also announced that it will start selling the newly-announced Google Nexus 5 on Nov. 8. The smartphone will be available with a $149.99 starting price on a two-year contract and it's currently the only device to rock Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

Considering the Nexus 5's high-end specs and software and affordable price tag, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if Galaxy Nexus owners decide to ditch their old smartphone and upgrade to the latest flagship smartphone from LG and Google.
