A Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone reportedly overheated until it caught fire and exploded in a man's jacket pocket.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the hottest devices currently available on the market, but in this case it's literally smoking hot. Fire investigators are reportedly looking at the phone's lithium battery as the cause.

Manolo Rodriguez, the unlucky owner of the Galaxy S4 in question, said he initially heard a sizzling sound and realized that the smartphone he was carrying in the chest pocket of his jacket was burning hot.

"I tried to reach for the phone and pull it out, but it was too hot," said Rodriguez. "So I retracted my hand, closed the zipper and then unzipped the center one so I could get my jacket off."

The man was in a Goodwill store at the time, so he just threw the jacket on the floor of the store. The Galaxy S4 caught fire, burning through the pocket of the jacket and singing both Rodriguez' fingertips and the floor it hit.

"If I had been talking on the phone or something, it could have exploded in my face," added the man. "It could have been worse."

Following this unfortunate incident, Rodriguez has hired an attorney and wants to get Samsung to recall all 20 million Galaxy S4 units it sold. In the meantime, the man has purchased an HTC One and will likely stay away from Samsung devices from now on.

Generally, there are some circumstances that could lead to extreme overheating of a device, such as using an off-brand battery replacement, leaving the phone for too long in the sun or heat, or others such. Rodriguez, however, had the original battery of the Galaxy S4 and had not left his phone in the sun or heat.

Samsung is reportedly investigating the incident and will offer no comment until it has reached a conclusion. According to Katu News, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently trying to determine how many similar cases have been reported so far.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the company's latest flagship smartphone and has received high praise for its top-end specs and features, but issues such as this one might affect the popularity of the device. No additional details are available at this point, but we'll keep you updated as Samsung completes its investigations and issues a formal statement regarding the incident.
