Sony is reportedly working on a new phablet device called the Xperia Z Ultra and the company decided to do some teasing with a new press invite.
Sony already has an Xperia Z smartphone and a namesake tablet, both of which are very capable devices that stirred plenty of interest with their high-end specs and waterproof capabilities. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will apparently come as a combination between the two, at least in terms of size.
While the company has yet to make it official, Sony did sent an interesting invite to French Android blog FrAndroid, the reliable Xperia Blog reports. At a first glance, the device teased in the press invite looks a lot like an oversized Sony Xperia Z.
"Sony Mobile has a big surprise for you," the invite would translate. "Don't forget to mark your calendars!" The text seems written with a stylus and teases an event scheduled for Thursday, July 4.
The tall, thin device pictured in this invite leaves little doubt that Sony is indeed gearing up to unleash a phablet version of its flagship Xperia Z smartphone. According to Xperia Blog, the device is called the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and sports a generous 6.4-inch display with the same 1080p resolution as the Xperia Z smartphone. The Xperia Z Ultra phablet may also boast a new infrared screen technology from Neodone.
The rumored device will also pack a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, backed up by an Adreno 330 graphics unit, 2GB of RAM and a low power digital signal processor designed to preserve battery life. The phablet will reportedly have 16GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot for additional memory. In terms of camera capabilities, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is expected to have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2.2-megapixel front shooter.
The Sony Xperia Z smartphone is one of the best handsets currently available on the market, sporting a beautiful 5-inch screen and waterproof capabilities, among other goodies. The Xperia Tablet Z is no less attractive and Sony seems to be betting big on its Xperia Z line. A new Xperia Z phablet should be similarly exciting, although the Ultra pictured here shows an uncovered headphone jack, which means it could skip the water-resistant trick.
Sony gave no details so far, but July 4 is not that far away. Would you be interested in a Sony Xperia Z phablet?
