Samsung is reportedly developing a sleeker version of its popular foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. This upcoming device is rumored to bring significant changes, including the use of a titanium backplate, which could set it apart from its predecessors.

Titanium Backplate Could Be a Game-Changer 

As reported by South Korean digital news outlet The Elec, Samsung might replace the traditional stainless steel and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials with a titanium backplate in the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. 

This decision, cited by an unnamed Samsung Electronics parts supplier, could mark a significant shift in the construction of Samsung's foldable phones. 

The use of titanium is particularly noteworthy because it is known for its strength and lightweight properties, though it is challenging to work with.

The titanium backplate is expected to act as a support structure between the foldable display and the hinge system. However, due to titanium's difficult-to-etch nature, Samsung may need to develop new manufacturing processes to ensure the hinge operates smoothly without compromising the durability of the device. This innovative design choice could enhance the phone's overall durability while maintaining a slim profile.

No S Pen Support: A Compromise for Slimness?

One of the most significant trade-offs with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim might be the absence of S Pen support, according to Android Headlines.

Previous reports suggested that the slimmer foldable might not include S Pen functionality, and the titanium backplate could be the reason. The interference between the titanium material and the digitizer, which enables the S Pen to function, may have led Samsung to omit this popular feature from the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which also features a titanium body, supports the S Pen. However, in that device, the titanium does not directly surround the display panel, which differs from the expected design of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. This distinction could explain the difference in S Pen compatibility between the two models.

Slimmer Design and Display Specs

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim is rumored to be noticeably thinner than its predecessor, measuring around 11mm in thickness compared to the 12.1mm thickness of the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6. 

Despite its slimmer profile, the device is expected to offer substantial screen real estate, with an 8-inch primary display and a 6.5-inch cover display. These dimensions suggest that Samsung is not compromising on display size while achieving a thinner and more portable design.

When Will We See Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim

While Samsung has yet to confirm the existence of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim, rumors indicate that the device could be officially introduced as early as October 2024. This timeline would place it as one of Samsung's flagship releases for the year, potentially alongside other high-end devices.

While the lack of S Pen support might disappoint some users, the device's enhanced durability and sleek profile could make it a quick option for those seeking a premium foldable smartphone.
