A man was reportedly electrocuted to his death in a freak accident involving the iPhone. The man's wife found him in the bathtub with severe burns and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the police report, the incident occurred on December 11. Richard Bull's wife discovered his lifeless body beside the iPhone charger.
Officer Craig Pattison initially considered suicide as a possible cause. He told the West London Coroner's Court that the cable was near the bath. He added that the "extension cable" appeared to be on the floor, with the phone charger at his chest.
The officer theorized that he might have died when the charger made contact with water. Based on the man's burn marks, assistant coroner Dr. Sean Cummings ruled the death as an accident.
In connection with the accident, Cummings is planning to write Apple. He is hoping that the company will educate and warn users of possible electrocution.
Other safety advocates have also shared their thoughts on the accident. Sheila Merill, a Royal Society adviser for the prevention of accidents told BBC of the risks. She said that any appliance attached to the main electricity circuit is dangerous. She added that water and electricity don't mix.
This is not the first time that iPhone freak accidents have killed individuals. A woman in china was allegedly electrocuted when she was using the iPhone 5. The 23-year old woman died when she picked up the phone when it fell to the floor, this happened in 2013.
In 2015, another accident claimed the life of Evgenia Sviridenko. The circumstances of her death are similar to Richard Bull's case. She died when her phone accidentally dropped in the bathtub when she was taking a bath.
Death by electrocution is certainly something that Apple should look into. Safety experts are hopeful that companies would be taking this seriously.
