Despite the constant claims that tablet devices may soon become obsolete, several manufacturers still continue to churn out their latest tablet offerings. The recently held 2017 Mobile World Congress (MWC) event even saw the launch of Samsung's latest tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3.

Apple, on the other hand, is expected to launch a brand new version of their iPad Pro tablet as well. In response to this, Google is expected to be coming out with their 2017 offering in the form of the new 2017 Google Nexus 7. However, there still seems to be a lot of confusion as to the actual moniker that will be used for the next generation Google tablet offering.

Google previously chose to rename their Nexus smartphones with their new Pixel branding. Given the company's desire to make the Pixel brand a staple in the tech industry, the next generation Nexus 7 may just be renamed. According to MobiPicker, Google may rename their next Nexus tablet into the Pixel 7.

The same report also predicts that this move may become a problem for the company as the Nexus brand is significantly more recognizable in the global market. The Pixel name is of course still gaining ground and users are slowly associating the brand with quality, durability, and performance.

If Google does choose to retain the Nexus moniker, the 2017 Nexus 7 will likely bring the Nexus brand back to its former glory. Google previously mentioned that they will be focusing much of their efforts on smaller devices in the coming years, which would include their smartphone, tablet, and home device products.

The 2017 Nexus 7 is expected to sport the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system out of the box, which will give users a pure Android experience. A report from Gigjets also predicts that Goole may be incorporating some VR functionality into the new tablet, but exactly how that will work is yet unknown.
