After intensive rumors and speculation circling the Web, the LG Optimus G is finally official. LG has officially announced the handset in South Korea on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and was showed off at a press event scheduled Sept. 19 in New York City.

The LG Optimus G packs a powerful Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 4.7-inch display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, and a new in-cell screen touch technology which makes the display thinner, brighter, and less reflective.

The handset's rear-facing camera comes in at no less than 13 megapixels, though some countries will reportedly get the LG Optimus G with an 8-megapixel camera due to supply issues. The device is scheduled to ship in "key global markets in October," and users who live in markets with 4G LTE support will be able to enjoy blazing fast data speeds.

Other features include an embedded 2,100mAh battery delivering a longer life span of 800 cycles compared with the 500 cycles current batteries provide. The phone will not ship, however, with the latest version of Google's mobile OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Instead, the LG Optimus G will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to LG, its new flagship will also take advantage of "cross-tasking," i.e. the ability to complete a number of complex tasks simultaneously without compromising other tasks. That ability will prove itself useful in various functions, as LG has detailed in its press release.

The QSlide Function, for instance, shows two different screens simultaneously on the display, allowing users to complete two tasks concurrently. This feature shows the entire screen of both functions, and users can easily send a text message while also watching a video, or perform other tasks at once.

The Live Zooming feature is designed to enhance the video-watching experience, allowing users to zoom up to five times to get a close-up while streaming the video. Meanwhile, the Dual Screen Dual Play function enables mirroring between the smartphone and a TV, and it can also display different content wirelessly on each screen.

The QuickMemo feature allows users to write, draw, or set a memo with their finger directly on the captured screen, and share it as an attachment or a URL. This function can also be used as an overlay feature, for instance for writing down a number and directly dialing it while the number is on the top layer. Another useful feature is Screen Zooming, which allows users to zoom in and out of lists in music player, text messages, e-mail, and photo gallery. In addition, this function also offers the ability to change the screen layout and font size.

The Application Link function is designed to launch preset applications such as calendar, e-mail, weather, or other, when the alarm is turned off. Lastly, the Icon Personalizer allows users to customize icons by editing the size or adding images, thus making the most frequently used apps more accessible.

The LG Optimus G is scheduled to hit shelves in South Korea next week, and launch worldwide in October. The U.S., however, will get the handset in November, as LG has told The Verge. LG did not offer pricing details in the press release, but according to Engadget the Optimus G will come with a roughly $895 price tag.
