Nokia is reportedly planning an exclusive 4G LTE deal with UK carrier Everything Everywhere for the new Lumia 920 smartphone. According to a Financial Times report citing "two people with knowledge of the situation," the UK exclusive would see Everything Everywhere, run by mobile giants T-Mobile and Orange, snag the Windows Phone 8 handset for a November launch. The deal echoes Nokia's sole-carrier agreement with AT&T in the United States.
PureView Goof
The new Lumia 920 was just announced, but its debut was marred by Nokia's controversial promotional video, which misled people to believe it was taken with the handset's PureView camera.
"Nokia recently apologized when it came clear that a video, which had been produced to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization, failed to make clear that it was a simulation only and not shot using the PureView camera on the Nokia Lumia 920," Nokia stated.
"This video was produced when the Nokia Lumia 920 was in preproduction. While there was no intention to mislead, the failure to add a disclaimer to the video was obviously a mistake, and we apologize for the misunderstanding it did cause." The company released a second video to demonstrate the camera's capabilities, and this time the material was actually shot with the handset's camera.
European Release
Rumors of a November European release started surfacing shortly after the Nokia Lumia launch last week, amid intense speculation that the Finnish company's sales plans would be more focused this time, as opposed to its strategy for its Windows 7 line. Several months back, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said his company plans to mimic its strategy from the U.S. for all new European launches. For the U.S. version of the Lumia 900, that strategy involved the sole-carrier deal with AT&T rather than a wider availability across multiple operators.
Nokia offered no comment on any potential negotiations with specific carriers, but it did confirm that the LTE version of the Nokia Lumia 920 would be compatible with the 1800MHz bands that Everything Everywhere plans to use for its new 4G network. The smartphone will support four other LTE bands as well, but it is unclear at this point whether this means the same version will operate on both UK and U.S. LTE.
Everything Everywhere is holding a "next-gen network" event on Tuesday, Aug. 11, one day before Apple's big event. EE's event could be the perfect stage for the two companies to announce an exclusive deal.
