In an interview, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard claimed that the company's latest titles "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" (2011) and "Fallout 4" (2015) each still have "millions" of daily players. More so, Howard said that a focus for the studio moving forward is discovering how to tell better stories in its open-world games.
Thanks to the last year's remaster, the Special Edition, "Skyrim's" playerbase received an abrupt new interest. Meanwhile, it appears that "Fallout 4's" new updates have kept players coming back. Howard further talked about coming back to the "Skyrim" series with the Special Edition after spending many years of working on "Fallout 4." According to him, it was like reuniting with an old friend from high school and realizing how much they have missed spending time together.
Howard also said that when creating a game like "Skyrim," it is like spending one's whole life on it. Eventually, one starts to lose perspective and starts to ask questions, like whether things are fun or not or what is good or bad for the game. He said that this is one of those rare times that one forgets all the versions of features that have been made and just play the game for what it is.
Moreover, Howard also discussed the unique qualities of both "Fallout 4" and "Skyrim." He mentioned that "Skyrim" was more about letting the players forge their own stories, whereas "Fallout 4," although it may be stronger, has a more specific story. He was also asked what "Fallout 4" does better than "Skyrim" and vice versa. He answered that it is how their content are presented while noting that both titles have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Howard also opened up about how telling stronger stories in open-world is said to be among the things that Bethesda Games Studios is considering for its future projects. He claimed that each of their games had successes and failures to learn from. He added that the team has new ideas they want to explore in the future because they feel like they haven't done enough or haven't really cracked it the way they think it could possibly be, GameSpot writes.
In other news, Bethesda confirmed that "The Elder Scrolls VI" is on the way, but fans are advised to not expect it to be soon. On the other hand, the studio is said to be working on another mobile game, following "Fallout Shelter," but it has not been officially announced as of yet.
