Death is certainly a dark subject that most people won't even talk about. But that doesn't erase the fact that most people that pass away will leave behind their social media accounts like Facebook. There are options that you can make before that happens though, either the account gets deleted or memorialized.

As shared by International Business Times, you first need to choose your legacy contact.

A legacy contact is a person on your Facebook friends' list, either a family member or a trusted friend. This contact will be able to delete or memorialize your Facebook account at the time of your passing. If you choose the latter, the legacy contact will be able to write a pinned post, like a final message.

This person can also respond to friend requests, update your profile picture and cover photo. This contact can also download an archived copy of your account. However, a legacy contact won't be able to log into your Facebook account, also not allowed to change posts or pictures that you have previously shared. More importantly, the contact won't be able to read your messages or remove friends from your account.

A memorialized account has the word "Remembering" next to the name on the profile page. What you have uploaded will stay on Facebook and will still be visible to your friends.

Here's how you set up your legacy contact. Click the upper right corner drop down menu and choose Settings. Find Security and then select Legacy Contact right before Deactivate Your Account. Add your chosen legacy contact by typing his or her name. You have the option to let that person know that you have chosen that person at that time, or click Not Now if you choose otherwise. Don't forget to let him or her know though.

If you have chosen to delete your account, just click Request account deletion instead of choosing a legacy contact.
