Square Enix has announced another installment in its popular franchise - "Lightning Crashes: Final Fantasy XIII." Due out next year, this installment will come as the sequel to end this chapter on the Final Fantasy XIII universe, as it is Lightning's last game.
As the name suggests, "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" focuses on Lightning, a major character in the first two Final Fantasy XIII titles. According to director Motomu Toriyama, Lightning will face her final battle in this installment.
Moreover, a report from Andriasang states that "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" will be a "world-driven" title, meaning that it will add some kind of social aspect to the game. It's difficult to say whether this would go over well with players, because not much is known about the feature so far.
Meanwhile, the battle system also seems to be undergoing some changes with this title, with Square Enix touting that the action will be more focused on button responses. While it is uncertain at this point what this actually means, it appears that "Lightning Returns" will be geared more toward the action genre compared to the previous titles. The publisher, however, avoided mentioning the word "action" during the presentation.
Square Enix revealed the new game at its Final Fantasy Gallery in Japan, saying that players will have many different options to customize Lightning. In addition to the various weapons to equip the character, players will also have a range of different outfits to dress Lightning. According to Adriasang, the range of costumes will be quite extensive, "a lot more" than 10 or 20.
"Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" is set in a place called Navus Partus, and part of the publisher's presentation focused on Lexerion, the largest city in the region. Lightning's power has increased throughout the first two Final Fantasy XIII games, and Toriyama promises she will be even stronger with this installment.
The new title will be available on consoles, but not on mobile or social platforms like various rumors have indicated. It is uncertain at this point, however, which consoles will get the title. The first two Final Fantasy XIII titles were available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so the new "Lightning Returns" will likely reach the same platforms.
