The IFA convention has made for an interesting week in the tech world, with all sorts of exciting devices and announcements. In an unusually shy and descrete manner, Samsugn has smuggled in a super-high-resolution Ultrabook at IFA, aiming to match Apple's high-resolution Retina display.

In Berlin, Samsung unveiled a prototype of its Series 9 ultrabook, which sports a whopping 2560 x 1440 display. Though Samsung's panel doesn't quite rise up to Apple's 15-inch, 2880 x 1800 Retina display on the MacBook Pro, its smaller size means almost identical pixel density.

Samsung already has a Series 9 laptop that is Ultrabook-approved, meaning it is thin and lightweight, weighing in at 3.6 pounds. The current model has a resolution of 1600 x 900, which may be reasonable for an Ultrabook, but doesn't even come close to the 2560 x 1440 resolution. In fact, this very high resolution is most often delivered on 27-inch desktop displays.

The prototype Samsung Series 9 WQHD Ultrabook is billed as a concept for now, but hopefully it will not take too long to actually reach the market. The 13-inch 2560 x 1440 display also touts another exciting aspect: it sports a matte finish, ideal for smooth graphics and on par with the visuals Apple offers on its MacBook Pro with Retina display. Apple does not have a matte option with the Retina display.

The matte finish might slightly reduce the clarity of that high pixel density display, but it would likely compensate with great readability in well-lit environments, as well as ease of use in sunlight. The MacBook Pro comes in at 221 pixels per inch (ppi), while Samsung comes in at 226 ppi. The difference, however, is unperceivable to the naked eye.

Samsung did not offer any details on further specifications, or even whether the prototype was just a proof of concept. The company simply sneaked the model in the corner of its innovation gallery. More information on this laptop will likely be available ahead of the holiday shopping season.

That's all we know or for now, but Geek.com should be getting more pictures and possibly some video before the weekend is out. You can bet there will be more information on this laptop well ahead of the holiday buying season. If you are curious about this concept, check out Mobile Geek's hands-on video here.
