"Call of Duty" 2017 is going "back to its roots" and Activision has explained the reason for it. Sledgehammer Games is developing the upcoming game this time and the video game developer has said on Twitter that it's their biggest achievement as game makers. Naturally, the company is extremely excited and are so are "Call of Duty" players. Activision's chief operating officer, Thomas Tippl, has stated that the "Call of Duty" 2017 will go back to its roots and traditional combat will once again take center-stage.
Tippl added that going back to the roots will definitely excite the dedicated community of "Call of Duty" players and also Sledgehammer. According to Game Spot, Tippl did not reveal anything else about the upcoming title but did mention his disappointment over "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare." While he has no second thoughts about the game being extremely innovative and of high quality, he stated that the game underperformed and couldn't meet Activision's expectations. He even gave the reason for the game's unimpressive performance.
"It's clear that, for a portion of our audience, the space setting just didn't resonate. We have a passionate, experienced studio deeply committed to this direction, and despite the risks we saw, we believe it is important to consider the passions of our game teams in deciding what content to create," Tippl explained during the latest earnings call.
It remains to be seen whether "Call of Duty" 2017 will use a classic or modern-day setting. It depends a lot on Sledgehammer that has also previously assisted with the development of "Modern Warfare 3" and even served as the lead developer of "Advanced Warfare." According to Forbes, it is high time "Call of Duty" did something other than sci-fi/futuristic stuff. If the developer chooses to return to the World War II setting, it may find difficulty in implementing the pacing, the streamlined movement, wall-running and so forth that fans have slowly come to love. Sledgehammer needs to innovate in this regard.
