While players already have the option of manually upgrading their PlayStation 4's internal hard drive, those who want to upgrade their consoles with an external hard drive can do so soon. The upcoming PS4 4.50 Firmware update will give players more options when it comes to expanding their PS4 storage memory.
With digital games and game data that still needs to be installed even though you already own a physical disc, the 500GB or 1TB PS4 won't really be enough for all your storage needs. According to Just Push Start, a lucky handful of PS4 owners received invites to test the 4.50 firmware, and they can now try using external storage for their PS4s.
In preparation for the public release of the 4.50 firmware update, here's how to use an external hard drive with the PS4. Do take note that you must use a USB 3.0 hard drive. Gamers can purchase either the 3.5 External Hard Drive or a portable hard drive, per Segment Next.
First, format the external hard drive. On your PS4 menu, go to Settings, then Devices. Select USB Storage Devices. If several external hard drives are connected to your PS4, choose the one you want to use, then you will receive to format the hard drive.
A quick set-up process will follow, which is quite east to follow especially if you are not as familiar with formatting hard drives required for upgrading the PS3. Once your external hard drive is formatted, return to the USB Storage Devices menu. Once you see a green light icon beside the external hard drive that you formatted, you are now ready to use the hard drive.
You can now use the external hard drive you formatted, or you can keep using your PS4's internal hard drive until it is full. To choose where your applications are installed on the PS4, highlight the hard drive you wish to use, click the Options button on your Dualshock 4 controller, and select "Confirm." "Application Install Location" will then pop up on the hard drive you will install data into.
Keep in mind that only "the applications and games are installed on the External Hard Drive." Game Save Data and other internal files are installed on the PS4's internal storage.
