The number one torrent client, uTorrent, has opened a new chapter that will no doubt anger the torrenting community. The client is freely distributed. However, the developers appear to have wants for cash and they cannot do that by sitting pretty in the current business model. The plan is to support advertisements in uTorrent, so get ready to view ads you probably won't be able to block.
The uTorrent client has over 125 million active users on a monthly basis. So, supporting ads would definitely bring in some serious cash. Well, that is if users stick around with the platform whenever this is put in place. uTorrent already makes $20 million per year via its toolbar. So, with the additional advertisement money, the company could double its profits.
We have a feeling that users won't be the only ones to be angered by this move. You see, uTorrent is used mainly for downloading illegal content, uTorrent and its advertisement system would make money from those who are doing stuff illegal, with not a single dime going back into the pockets of content creators. There is a high chance uTorrent might have to share some of its revenue to keep the advertisement business model going, or risk a backlash from the bigwigs.
This is where you might just lose your whole head. Advertisements in uTorrent will differ in many countries. The boys behind the client made this possible by tracking your IP address to know which country you are from. We expect many users to defect for this very reason. The uTorrent team stated that your privacy is guaranteed, so it is likely cops with high powered weapons won't be breaking down your bedroom door any time soon.
What we think?
Not a bad move by uTorrent. Money needs to be made and what better way to do it than adding in advertisements rather than having users pay for the privilege.
