Conflicting statements from Crytek developers claimed that Crysis 3 is in the anvil as well as that it's not in development for Wii U, Nintendo's next-generation video game console. Now, the company has finally lifted the veil of confusion and confirmed that Nintendo won't be seeing the Nanosuit in action.
"Just to answer the speculation, we are not currently working on a Wii U version of Crysis 3," general manager at Crytek Nick Button-Brown said on Twitter.
The news recently caused several questions to be raised, including if Crysis 3 would be simplified to accommodate a potentially weaker Wii U (compared to current-generation consoles). Crytek's graphics engine is pushing current hardware to the limit; so, it's questionable if Crytek is willing to compromise the experience for Wii U.
The comment from Crytek said that the option isn't being ruled out, adding that no specific release date for Wii U is on the cards; therefore, it's hard to say whether Crysis 3 would land on the title. Even if in development for the console, a Wii U version probably would arrive after the February 2013 release.
Conversely, a developer for Crytek said there's a "fat chance" of Crysis 3 coming to Wii U. This led to the ensuing confusion.
Crysis 3 is the sequel to Crysis 2. Players return to New York, encased by Nanodomes, creating distinct environments throughout the city. Crytek has said that seven environments will feature, hopefully ensuring visual variety. The developer has also said that the game will be a melding of approaches between the original Crysis and Crysis 2. The latter removed the open world-esque approach Crysis 1 brought, swapping it for greater linearity instead.
The clarification is a blow for Nintendo, given that the company wants to gain third-party developer support. Rival Microsoft has charged ahead gaining timed exclusives on third-party content, notably the Call of Duty map packs. Nintendo probably isn't going to be the home of competitive first-person shooters, but it needs to attract a broader player base than the casual fans popularized with the Wii.
Crysis 3 releases February 2013 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
