Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen, collectively known as the Coen brothers, have recently announced that they are working on a new project. However, their latest project will be for the small screen instead.
According to Variety, the Coen brothers' new project is a limited series. Joel and Ethan will be collaborating with Annapurna Television to create "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs." Sources reveal that "Annapurna intends to pursue an innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical."
The Coen brothers wrote the script for the show, which is based on an original idea. Joel and Ethan will also direct "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs." Aside from writing the script and directing the project, the Coens will also produce the show via their label Mike Zoss Productions.
Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle, Annapurna Television's president of television, will serve as executive producers. The Coens have said that they are "very excited" to collaborate with Ellison and Naegle on the upcoming TV show.
While it is still unknown how "theatrical distribution" will be implemented in "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," it was confirmed that the show will be filmed as a miniseries since sources also revealed that "the scope of the project seemed too challenging to be covered in one feature film." The treatment for the show will be similar to Imagine Entertainment's adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, Imagine partners, made plans for both a "Dark Tower" show and film, but they instead went for a movie that Sony will release later in 2017.
The Coen brothers are following several "elite directors" who also started working on film projects that eventually made their way to the small screen. Like the Coens, David O. Russell is working on an Amazon series starring Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro. Meanwhile, a limited series featuring Meryl Streep and written and directed by J.J. Abrams "is currently being shopped."
In other news, the A.V. Club revealed that "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" will "weave together six different story lines." However, the Coen brothers are keeping mum about the show's plot.
The Coen brothers have previously worked on films such as "Barton Fink," "No Country for Old Men," and "True Grit."
