Love the GTA 5 game? Enthusiastic about self-driving cars? Well, now anyone with a computer and copy of GTA 5 can develop an autonomous driving car. According to the latest update, OpenAI, a non-profit company chaired by Elon Musk and Sam Altman have announced that they are releasing Universe integration with Grand Theft Auto.
It is developed and maintained by DeepDrive project, a platform that can turn GTA 5 into research arena. This can help improve the self-driving technology at much faster rate than it is done at present. As reported by Inverse, Jack Clark, Strategy and Communications Director said,
"Setting up DeepDrive will take only 20 minutes with the help of Universe. A pre-trained AI that has seen about 21 hours of GTA driving will also be included in the Universe."
GTA 5 has a vast terrain that can be used to test the self-driving car. GTA 5 has deserts, mountains, highways, and 257 cars to use. The date generated by using GTA 5 can be utilised in the real world.
This is not the first time that GTA 5 will be used to test AI for autonomous driving technology. Earlier Intel has used the GTA 5 to test self-driving technology. But no one has ever released the modification to general public.
DeepDrive was started in 2015 to configure GTA 5 and making changes so that it could be used in training Self-driving cars. With the integration of DeepDrive and Universe, researchers will have greater flexibility in testing. At present, one need an actual car to test the performance of self-driving cars.
By using GTA 5 in testing the self-driving cars, there is no real threat to lives and on-road vehicles. Simulations such as increasing traffic, adding snow, etc. can all be tested with GTA 5. This integration will ease up the process of testing autonomous cars. It will also reduce the cost and time of testing. A benchmark measure that will enable researchers to compete with each other with their version of AI is under development and could be released soon.
