The "Ghost in the Shell" anime will soon find its way back to U.S. and U.K. theaters. The "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" TV series will also return to Cartoon Network.
The Verge reported that the original "Ghost in the Shell," which first released in 1995, will return to theaters and on Blu-ray. The film will release ahead of the live-action "Ghost in the Shell," starring Scarlett Johansson.
The classic "Ghost in the Shell" anime will screen for a single night only on January 25 in the U.K. In the U.S., Funimation will screen the subtitled and dubbed versions of the anime on February 7 and 8, respectively. The returning anime will be available in 110 theaters in the U.S. Lionsgate is also set to relaunch the movie on Blu-ray in a Deluxe Collector's Edition package, including Mondo artwork and Steelbook packaging. The Blu-ray set will be available on March 7.
The original "Ghost in the Shell" was directed by Mamoru Oshii and successfully ushered the genre to American audiences. In 2002, the TV series, "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" was released, which featured an alternate story from the 1995 film and manga.
The manga series launched in 1989, primarily set in a fictional Japan in the mid-21st century. The plot focuses on a a team of a special-ops task force that battles cyber-criminals, corrupt politicians and hi-tech terrorists. The series has been well-received by fans and have led to various adaptations through the years.
Cartoon Network's Toonami also announced that the "Ghost in the Shell: SAC" series will return to the network, beginning on February 4, 2017. The return of the classic 1995 film and TV series will pave the way for new audiences to become familiar with the story and characters before the Hollywood adaptation launches. These will also be a great way for old fans to reminisce on the adventures of Major Motoko Kusanagi and the counter-cyberterrorist activities of her group, Public Security Section 9.
In the meantime, the live-action "Ghost in the Shell" by Paramount, directed by Rupert Sanders, is set to launch on March 29, 2017. More updates and details on "Ghost in the Shell" are expected soon.
