Valve's digital distribution platform, Steam, has made history by reaching 14 million concurrent users. This came after Steam's recent Winter Sale concluded earlier last week. It reached a new peak of 14.2 million simultaneous users. Interestingly, the games that earned Steam revenue in 2016 also charted near the top. Games such as "Civilization V," "GTA 5" and "Football Manager 2017," hit between 50,000 and 100,000 users a piece.
According to Kotaku, Valve games such as "Dota 2" and "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" reached 951,942 and 671,363 users respectively. In 2012, Steam reached five million concurrent users and 10 million in 2015. That's a massive growth in a very short period of time. However, revenue from game sales seemed to be evening out. In 2016, way more games were released on Steam than any other year but the revenues from them weren't that impressive.
The revenue figure, of course, did not consider micro-transactions, which is a lifeline for numerous games, especially free-to-play games. Games such as "Dota 2" and "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" makes thousands of dollars via in-game purchases. As per PC Gamer, Valve routinely hits user milestones in January. This is because more and more users play games on Steam during the holiday season.
It has also been reported that the game "Stardew Valley" made more money on Steam than most other holiday blockbusters. It made more money from pure unit sales on Steam than mega-hitters such as "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," "Mafia III," "Dishonored 2" and "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided." The game has become one of the greatest success stories of 2016. "Stardew Valley's" single developer made over $30 million and that's huge!
The game was released at a low price point, MSRP of $14.99, making it one of the least expensive games of 2016, writes Game Revolution. Soon, "Stardew Valley" was thrust into the spotlight as it hit the number one spot on Steam's Top Seller list.
