Diablo 3, over a month after launching, continues to have issues aside from Chinese players using Koren copies of the game to play and players unknowingly being charged money on the Real Money Auction House. The latest issue to plague Blizzard, the developers, is that Linux players are being banned -- and an outcry has ensued on Diablo 3's forum.
"We've extensively tested for false positives situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly. We've not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings.
"Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned - cheating will," community manager Bashiok posted on the forum. Linux users are playing via WINE, software that effectively emulates Windows programs in another operating system.
E-mails apparently appeared after extensive play sessions, according to Linux user Marcus Meng who spoke with gaming Web site Polygon.
"I thought it was just one of the usual scams at first, so I didn't think much of it. I went home, tried to log in, and it said that my account was locked; checking on my battle.net account page shows the banned message," Meng revealed. The e-mail claimed he was using unapproved software, or "actions deemed inappropriate" as the e-mail said. Users can appeal account closures, but reinstating an account is very unlikely.
Meng has been able to play other games via WINE without a ban, including Blizzard's Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft.
"Unauthorized third party software was found to be being used on your account ... further inquiries regarding this issue will not receive a reply," a ticket - send by Meng - to Blizzard support stated after the first ticket didn't provide information on why the ban happened. "Thus, they have cut out all avenues of communication they have made available for this issue to me," Meng added.
Other users are arriving at frustrating conclusions; video game Web site Gaming Blend has collected reports of users contacting Blizzard. Even when Polygon contacted Blizzard, it was referred to the aforementioned Bashiok forum post.
