Even though Google's Galaxy Nexus device is involved in a potential ban dispute over universal search, Samsung has seemingly predicted its Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone could be next as the company has reportedly removed universal search from the S3. Samsung and Sprint described the update as a "security update" prior to releasing the over-the-air patch.
As a result the Google search bar can't be used; two fixes are available, though: use the search app from a previous version, or follow this guide on the Android Central forums (post #41).
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was banned for a week, but it is now available again on the Google Play store.
U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh granted a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Nexus in June, and the injunction could be lifted temporarily ahead of a potential complete elimination of the injunction.
The Galaxy Nexus is a year old, but continues to be Google's flagship smartphone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean arriving first on the device and bringing new features such as the real-time updating service Google Now and performance improvements through Project Butter. There's no word on an official Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3, but unofficial hacks are available. The Galaxy Nexus is available for $349, which is cheap compared to the cheapest sim-free iPhone 4S costing $649.
Jelly Bean co-launched on the Nexus 7 tablet, also developed by Google, which is taking aim at the 7-inch market Apple hasn't touched. Rumors suggest that could change soon with the launch of a 7- or 8-inch iPad Mini around October 2012.
Samsung's third generation Galaxy S device has been a success thus far, registering 10 million pre-orders worldwide. The device is, mostly, available now: Verizon pushed back the in-store availability date to July 12. Pre-orders made today are eligible for overnight delivery. The device brings a HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon S4 processor, S Voice - the Siri rival - and the latest version of Android's TouchWiz UI among other features.
