Dell XPS 13 was finally released last CES 2015 and got the approval of a lot of tech experts with its innovative, sleek and light features. In CES 2017, this computer is developed to a 2-in-1 version. Here is a first look at the new offering from Dell.
Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 version is now out but a lot of technology enthusiasts say that it is not as innovative as its initial version. However, the company made it more useful for the conversion of the laptop to a 2-in-1 which comes right after HP Spectre x360 released its second generation, one of Dell XPS 13's close competitors.
The benefit of this news is that this remains to be one of the favorites of tech experts since its peers aren't any better than the original. This made translating the computer to 2-in-1 a lot better. The new computer is very direct, closed and side-by-side which makes you wonder how it is two-in-one. Slim and light - it is 0.54 inches max tapered to 0.32 inches along its body. It has a pair of full-circle hinges instead of the single-wide hinge used in its previous version.
More similarities can be seen - from the black interior having soft-touch, the slim travel keyboard slightly modified from the original version. An InfinityEdge display can be found on top of the keyboard and the bezels are slim at around half-inch thick and the same 1080p resolution choices are available. Such displays may not be the best in their respective categories but they perform well during testing.
The location of the camera, on the other hand, is erratic. It is still positioned underneath the display when the system is used as a laptop creating weird camera angles especially when you do video calls. A tent mode can fix this according to dell, however, for that case, the keyboard will be used as a stand and it is apparent that it is just a temporary solution and not a permanent one.
The computer was also upgraded to support facial recognition in Windows Hello. Active pen accessory is compatible with the touchscreen. The processor made all the difference as the new version went for the Y-Series or Core M - low-power processors which are friendlier for the batteries, however, delivers less performance than the Intel mobile chips.
Of course, that also means performance will be lower than it might’ve been. The company’s countering that argument by saying the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is as quick as the original XPS 13. We’re not sure everyone will buy that line. More believable is Dell’s insistence that it has tuned its firmware to maximize the time the processor spends in higher power states, which should take an edge off any performance hit.
The advantages of the Dell XPS 13 2-in-one version are as follows: excellent design, thin bezel display, fast performance and pleasant keyboard. On the other hand, it is available only with the Intel Y-Series.
