Leaked screenshots of an impending Twitter update claimed the app was going to be majorly revised, from the logo to notifications. That update is now live, so is it what was rumored?
Expanded Tweets are in: viewing Tweets from partner Web sites also shows previews, images, videos "and more." The "best" Tweets are also highlighted when an event is happening, as the screenshots revealed.
Notifications receive a double update in 4.3: Ambient Notifications appear at the Status Bar when using the app, and Push Notifications can be enabled for people being followed when tweeted or retweeted. The latter is also coming to Android version 3.3, along with other features such as tappable avatars taking users to profiles and expanded Tweets.
Other improvements are for autocomplete searches, the Discover tab shows a notification when new stories are available, tapping avatars goes directly to the user's profile and the Twitter logo has been updated.
The new bird logo represents a simplified focus for the brand, rather than a lowercase "t" in the word Twitter. "Whether soaring high ... or flocking with other birds to achieve a common purpose, a bird in flight is the ultimate representation of freedom, hope and limitless," Twitter creative director Doug Bowman said.
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said it's difficult to update while 400 million users are using a service. In an interview with the LA Times, he said further improvements will bring "further simplification of the product" along with improved speed. For a service that's about sending messages frequently and quickly, speed has to be a priority. Facebook has similar issues with its mobile apps, to the point where the mobile site is a better choice because apps freeze and don't update notifications and events.
Costolo also said during the interview that the app will offer a "richer events experience" and the "specialness" - that went when Twitter apps unified - will return.
Performance improvements, Hungarian language support, and many "other tweaks, polish, and bug and crashes fixes" are included. The screenshots were, then, completely accurate.
Twitter version 4.3 for iOS is available now for free. Android version 3.3 is also available for download, for free.
