Twitter for iOS is getting a major update that aims to address criticisms that power users don't solely use the app, according to the leaked images in the iOS 6 App Store. Improvements include push notifications from selected users when tweets are published, and tappable avatars that go directly to the user's profile.

Users will be able to view tweet details which link to "partner websites" along with images and video, hand-picked content when events are happening from all Twitter users, autocomplete suggestion improvements when searching for users in the Connect section, push notifications for tweets when sent from selected users and "Ambient Notifications" that appear in the status bar.

The Discover tab shows when new stories can be loaded, includes support for personalized trends, avatars that go to the user's profile, performance improvements and "other tweaks, polish, and bug and crasher fixes."

Update notes for Instagram for iOS leaked ten days prior to the release of the update, so perhaps Twitter's isn't too far away.

The official app has been less popular than third-party alternatives, such as Tweetbot which combines a unique metallic design with deep functionality. Twitter acquired the developers of Tweetie for iOS, which was a popular choice on the platform.

A redesign has also been rumored for iPad, which hasn't arrived yet. The new Twitter logo will also show; "our new bird grows out of love for ornithology, design with creative constraints, and simple geometry," the company said June 6. "[T]here's no longer a need for text, bubbled typefaces, or a lowercase "t" to represent Twitter," it added.

Twitter also previously announced it would be watching developers who used Twitter APIs to develop apps that copied the service's functionality. Twitter didn't ban third-party apps, such as Tweetbot, despite the concerns.

LinkedIn Twitter integration was also scrapped June 30 which was introduced in 2009. "[T]he increasing importance of us providing the core Twitter consumption experience through a consistent set of products and tools" was cited as a reason for the ending of the partnership.

Twitter for iOS is available now.
