Author Diana Gabaldon recently confirmed that Mr. Willoughby will appear in "Outlander" Season 3. The mysterious character is from "Voyager," the third book in the "Outlander" series.
The "Outlander" author simply tweeted that Mr. Willoughby will be in the third season. The character has been a person of interest among several fans of the series. Mr. Willoughby's real name is Yi Tien Cho, a Chinese scholar who used to work for the Chinese government before going on exile. He stayed in Edinburgh and had very limited resources, being forced to live on the docks and steal food to survive.
The Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) eventually found him and gave him the nickname, Mr. Willoughby, since the former was uncomfortable with his real name. Mr. Willoughby has a drinking problem and usually gets into trouble, but Jamie still keeps on helping him. Mr. Willoughby has some knowledge in Chinese medicine and will accompany the main characters as they travel to Jamaica.
Several "Outlander" fans previously shared on social media how they would not wish for Mr. Willoughby to appear on the show. Some were particularly concerned that the character would be portrayed in a stereotypical and discriminatory manner. Other fans wanted the series to stay as close to the books as possible, stating that the characters in the historical novel should not be made to comply with current cultural standards.
After a fan asked whether "Outlander" will skip the entire Mr. Willoughby storyline, Gabaldon replied on Twitter that the character will surface soon, hinting that the show producers may be following the books very closely. The actor who will play Mr. Willoughby has not yet been announced. Some speculate that a casting announcement for the character has not been made yet, because he only appeared after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) traveled back in time via the stones.
The first half of "Outlander" Season 3 will delve into the Battle of Culloden and its aftermath in Jamie's timeline. There will also be a flash forward, featuring Frank (Tobias Menizies) and his wife in Boston. The production of "Outlander" is set to continue soon.
