BioWare's much anticipated "Extended Cut" DLC for Mass Effect 3 releases June 26, expanding on the controversial ending. However, BioWare isn't changing the ending and says some fans won't like what Extended Cut brings.
BioWare's executive producer on the series, Casey Hudson, said that the ending expands on what the original offered. "There are people who outright rejected the whole concept of the endings, and wanted us to start from scratch and redo everything," Hudson said in the company's latest podcast, according to The Official Xbox Magazine. Many fans felt that the endings didn't answer the questions the series had asked throughout the trilogy, and were angered that the time invested into the series had not brought a satisfying conclusion.
Hudson added BioWare hasn't minded the feedback, especially "[w]hen things are really constructive like that ... it means a lot to us, because when you think about the artists and writers, all the people here - they work because they're passionate about games."
Hudson did reveal there were people who loved the endings, though, so redoing everything wouldn't have appealed to that section. Some fans also suspected BioWare of intentionally holding back DLC, knowing the largely negative fan reaction was coming.
"Bit we didn't do the Extended Cut because we're trying to make everybody happy, make it perfect - we just saw an opportunity to expand on things that we felt could add value to the experience," Hudson also said.
Mass Effect 3 released March 2012, after being originally scheduled for a November 2011 release. Despite the negative reaction, the game was critical success: Game Informer said BioWare "delivered one of the most intricately crafted stories in the history of the medium," while Edge Magazine awarded the game an 8/10 and criticized the series for being off-putting to players who weren't invested in the trilogy but said 3 is a "spectacular, powerfully imagined and dramatically involving final act to one of gamings richest sci-fi sagas." On PC, the Metacritic rating is as high as 94/100.
Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut release June 26 for Xbox 360 and PC worldwide, and for the PlayStation 3 in North America. European PS3 owners get the DLC July 6.
