"Gotham" has been on FOX for three seasons now; and it has introduced a variety of Batman's notorious foes since its pilot episode. That said, fans await the day that Catwoman, Riddler, and Penguin are joined by The Joker.

Showrunners might not have officially brought in the Clown Prince of Crime, but they did introduce Jerome Valeska, played by Cameron Monaghan. This character has displayed very loose morals and entertained the audience with his potentially iconic cackle.

Avid viewers of the DC show anticipate Jerome to eventually evolve into The Joker, or at the very least, inspire someone else to take after the infamous criminal. The latter option became even more popular after the character was stabbed to death in "Gotham" Season 2.

The plot twist of Jerome being alive became even more plausible after it was revealed that his corpse was being held at Indian Hill - a research facility below Arkham Asylum where Dr. Hugo Strange brought dead Gothamites back to life.

Monaghan posted a photo on his Instagram account that showed himself and Morena Baccarin, portraying coroner Leslie Thompkins. In the picture, his face has been cut off, which suggests that Dr. Francis Dulmacher - otherwise known as the Dollmaker - will eventually make his reappearance. This plot hints that "Gotham" Season 3 will be taking on DC's "New 52" story arc, where The Joker wears his own facial skin like a mask, according to CBR.

Another one of Monaghan's teaser photos shows himself wearing a post-1980s version of the Clown Prince. He had the bright purple vest, green hair, and the iconic villain's signature haunting smile. To date, it remains unclear whether the actor is merely trolling the fans or if he is actually filming for "Gotham" Season 3.

Executive Producer John Stephens revealed that it is their "intention to bring Jerome back," and that the cult of Jerome is only their means of building up to the character's return. "We are building the architecture for him to come back," Stephens told Zap2It (now rebranded as Screener.)
