"Civil War II" has just released its very last issue. This comic book event series may have already ended, but not before adding a couple more plot twists that will affect the course of the Marvel universe.
In the previous issue, it was confirmed that Captain Marvel defeated Iron Man in one-on-one combat. The fight ensued even after Tony Stark's armor was completely destroyed -- eventually putting him in a comatose state. At that point, Tony looked like he was dead, but after "Civil War II #8," multiple news sources have reported otherwise.
IGN reported that Tony had actually survived the battle with Carol Danvers. It was Beast who discovered that he has been experimenting on his own body. Had he not done so, he would have faced certain death as this is the "only thing keeping his body alive."
It remains unclear precisely what it was that Tony did to his own body, but Beast told the rest of the Avengers in "Civil War II #8" that he is "going to have to dig a lot deeper." This is not the first time that Tony risked his life for his own experiments. He had also injected the Extremis virus into himself, which made him "carry the crucial undersheath of the Iron Man suit" in his body.
With the barely-alive Tony in stasis, attention has since been focused on his successor, Ironheart. Riri Williams, a 15-year-old student at MIT, made her own version of Iron Man's suit. "Invincible Iron Man" is all about the beginnings of this young heroine. "Tony first put the armor to save his heart," writer Brian Michael Bendis told Wired. "Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether, but still heart-related."
"Regardless of where he [Tony] might be physically, he will be soaring along with her spiritually," added series editor Tom Breevort.
