People believe that Google has sidelined its previous flagship phones with the advent of the celebrated Google Pixel series. Google Pixel and Pixel XL are the self-branded latest offerings by Google. However, it is not like Google has forgotten its earlier statement making phones, including the Google Nexus 6. The smartphone is pegged to get an Android 7.1.1 Nougat update in January 2017.
Previously, Google Nexus 6 users had received the news from Google that some of the previous Google devices would also be receiving the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1. The announcement was made in early December that Nexus 6 update would be rolled out in the upcoming weeks, but a concrete announcement was done only over a month later.
What was the reason for this delay that further irked the Google Nexus 6 owners? Google said that the lateness was due to a "last-minute bug" specific to the Nexus 6. Google did not completely specify the nature of the bug it was dealing with. However, the company has, in the meanwhile, confirmed that the issue has been sorted and effectively dealt with, and the update will arrive very soon over-the-air.
"Unfortunately, we found a last minute bug that was specific to the Nexus 6, which has caused the delay in the 7.1.1 OTA rollout. We've since fixed the issue and will be rolling out an update in early January," Google stated to Android Police.
It is important to note that Google Nexus 6 was released in 2014 and this fact makes the phone almost 3 years old. This classifies Google Nexus 6 as almost an ancient handset and as such, the Android Nougat 7.1.1 update will be the last major upgrade the device will be seeing. This does not exclude the patches sent on a monthly basis for upholding the security of the smartphone. It may so happen that the Nexus 6 may be denied the next major Android version rollout, as the same thing happened to its predecessor Google Nexus 5.
