Cyanogen Inc., which is the holding company of CyanogenMod community project, has announced that it will be shutting down its operations. The project's website and infrastructure had been offline during the Christmas weekend.
According to Android Authority, Cyanogen is shutting down but its remaining portion will be kept alive by the new community-driven custom ROM called the Lineage Android Project. It is confirmed on the official Twitter page of CyanogenMod, "UPDATE: As of this morning we have lost DNS and Gerrit is now offline - with little doubt as a reaction to our blog post yesterday. Goodbye"
This has been a sudden move of Cyanogen, but all hopes are up as something good is coming. All that Cyanogen has been worked for will be carried out by Lineage Android Project. The developers, including the brain behind CyanogenMod, Steve Kondik, have reassembled regarding Lineage OS to serve as a "fork" for CM.
From Android Central, it was said that the latest version has been out and updated to the most recent Android Security Bulletin patches, and mountains of source code are in the process of being 'forced' into something new - the Lineage Android Distribution.
According to a final post on the CyanogenMod blog, "This fork will return to the grassroots community effort that used to define CM while maintaining the professional quality and reliability you have come to expect more recently,"
"Even if we were to regroup and rebuild our own infrastructure, continuing development of CM would mean to operate with the threat of sale of the brand looming over our heads." This has been the reason why the need for a fork is required.
There are no updates regarding the details of LineageOS, but this post on the new project's official Twitter page is the start for a bright future ahead: "Your Lineage will finish what you started, Cid."
