As expected a new version of Apple's mobile operating system was unveiled at the company's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday. The beta version of iOS 6 has been released for developers, while it will be hitting iGadgets no earlier than fall.
Here are the top 10 new features that you should know about the next-generation Apple mobile operating system.
New Maps App
The rumors have come true that Apple is ditching Google Maps in iOS 6. Flyover mode (rumored as 3D Mode) transforms the normal satellite view into a 3D photographic model, showing realistic details about several U.S. cities. The new Apple Maps app also includes turn-by-turn navigation and real time traffic.
Siri for iPad
At last, Apple is bringing Siri to some other device than the iPhone 4S. Siri is all set to be one of the features of the third generation iPad ('new iPad') by the end of this year. The functionality of the app has also been improved. Siri now knows everything about sports and movies.
Facebook Integration
With the launch of iOS 5 last year, Apple integrated Twitter with its devices. This time, Apple is bringing Facebook to iGadgets. In iOS 6, both Twitter and Facebook will be available right in hand for posting on the go.
FaceTime over 3G
FaceTime over cellular networks was one of the most missed features in iOS devices. Apple fanboys could only utilize FaceTime over Wi-Fi. But now, FaceTime will run over cellular networks on iOS 6-powered devices.
Passbook
Passbook app is specially designed for business users. This app brings a lot of stuff like movie tickets, boarding pass, air tickets and even sporting event tickets in one place and organizes then digitally. Frequent flyers will find this app very useful.
VIP Mail
VIP Mail is the most significant among the newly added features to the e-mail app. This feature is based on priority system that brings mails received from VIP senders on the top of list, rather than arranging e-mails in received time-based fashion. Moreover, you can now add additional content like picture and videos directly from the e-mail app.
Safari
Apple brings some of the feature that competitive browser makers have been offering for ages. Hooked with the same Apple ID, Safari on iOS and Safari on desktop/laptop can sync data like open tabs and bookmarks among themselves. Offline reading function has been added that lets you place the cached version of a Web page in phone memory to read it later, even when the network is not available.
Photo Stream Sharing
Photo Stream was added to iGadgets with iOS 5 that lets you share photos through iCloud across all your Apple devices (iOS and OS X). Apple has added some more functionality to the feature. Users can create shared photo streams in iOS 6 and share them with friends who can also comment on the pictures. These photos can additionally be viewed in iPhoto app, on Apple TV, on Mac and even on a Windows PC through Web browser.
Guided Access
Guided Access let users disable some parts of the operating system. The app works like the ages-old Child Lock feature found in TV sets. In case your child wants to play Doodle Jump then he/she can play the game only, while other parts of the OS will be disabled.
Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb disables all the alerts and notification so that you can work peacefully. However, do not confuse this mode with flight mode as your phone still receives incoming calls and text messages, but it simply does not react to them. The screen does not light up and there is no vibration or sound. However, in case there is some emergency, like someone calls you three times in five minutes, the Do Not Disturb mode will disengage.
Other Features
The list of new features does not end here. Apple says that there are more than 200 new features in iOS 6 including a lot of minor updates and new features like Lost Mode, Faster Bluetooth toggle, updates to phone app, etc.
