In an interview with IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto talked deeply about Pikmin 3 and the decision making process of deciding if the game should be on the Wii or Wii U. Miyamoto also revealed the game won't have online play, which could be a worrying sign for future Wii U titles.
"You have to be very careful that you don't drop frames as you're trying to sync up with other players over what could be a very great physical distance, over the internet. But in the situation of Pikmin, for example, since you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection.
"So I think what we've decided to do is focus on the single-player and local multiplayer aspects, which are really fun. But unfortunately, no online multiplayer for for Pikmin 3," Miyamoto said.
Nintendo was under pressure from some fans to deliver an online system that could rival Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, complete with features such as voice/party chat and player profiles. The company unveiled Miiverse, a platform for enabling video chat with players and saying how a game makes a player feel.
On the development back-and-forth between the Wii and Wii U, Miyamoto said it came down to the latter having better hardware and being able to see the Pikmin when zoomed out. He added the fundamental game hasn't changed, simply saying it's "going to be much better on the Wii U."
When asked about GamePad implementation Miyamoto didn't specifically talk about the controller's functions, instead explaining whether to follow the semi-scripted model of Pikmin 1 or the explorable nature of Pikmin 2. Pikmin 3 is a strategic game, Miyamoto revealed, but more accessible through being able to see all the map at once and replaying actions at the end of the day. The Wii U also displays a throwing cursor to show exactly where Pikmin land, a feature Miyamoto said wasn't possible on the Wii.
Pikmin 3 has no release date.
