Apple kicked off WWDC 2012 with plenty of announcements, chief among them the debut of iOS 6. Some of the unveiled features were expected, while there was no UI refresh, and here’s what you need to know.

Facebook

Following Tim Cook saying "stay tuned" on Facebook iOS integration at the All Things Digital D10 conference, Scott Forstall - senior vice president of iOS software - announced the social media platform would be directly integrated into Apple's newest version of its mobile operating system. It works similarly to Twitter, presenting a pop-up window where users can share a status with or without a photo attached. Friends' birthdays will be integrated into the calendar.

Siri for iPad

Siri debuts on the iPad, following its launch on the iPhone 4S in 2011, supporting sports scores and statistics, and sorts restaurants by rating. Apple has partnered with OpenTable for the ability to book a table via Siri, with Rotten Tomato integration sorting movie listings or an actor or actress' movie appearances. Saying an app name will launch the app.

Safari for iOS has received updates, through offline reading and iCloud tabs. The latter syncs tabs from other iOS devices using iCloud, and the browser goes fullscreen when in landscape mode.

Passbook, the new app by Apple which brings all boarding passes, movie tickets and reward cards together in one place, also debuted.

Finally, Turn-by-Turn Navigation

The biggest reveal, turn-by-turn navigation, was part of the announcement of Apple's Maps app. Maps has 100 million business listings thanks to Yelp integration, traffic reports, and the aforementioned turn-by-turn navigation, which also works from the lock screen. Siri allows users to ask questions such as "are we there yet?" and get an estimated arrival time. As suspected Maps also uses 3D models of cities, called "Flyover."

Text messages can now be sent directly from the Phone app if a call can't be taken: rejecting a call shows a list of preconfigured messages, such as texting back later or setting a reminder to call back when leaving work. Also new is the Do Not Disturb feature which allows calls to be blocked during a specific schedule while certain people can be whitelisted, so if there's a call twice in a short period of time the second will come through.

Other features are Photo Streams being shared, with persons getting notifications when a new photo is shared, and a VIP feature in Mail. Special notifications are received when a new e-mail is sent by a VIP, photos and videos can now be attached to in-line messages, and users can pull Mail down to refresh.
