At Apple's keynote at WWDC on Monday, the tech giant unveiled the new Maps app for iOS devices and revealed features such as 3D view - called Flyover - and the long-requested turn-by-turn navigation.

Three map startups have been implemented into the OS - Placebase, Poly9 and C3 Technologies - which were acquired in 2009. Poly9 and C3 Technologies used 3D mapping technology, which is available to view when turning on the new Flyover mode. There's also a 2D and Satellite view.

In its attempt to knock out Google Maps from the race, Apple announced several updates, including offline viewing and 3D maps. Mobile & Apps didn't get the chance to try out the Apple Maps. but tech Web site The Verge said Apple's 3D implementation looks a little better than Google's.

TomTom is also providing mapping data for the app: heading to the settings menu of the app says data is gained from TomTom and "others." Heading to the acknowledgements list, OpenStreetMap is a key contributor which also collects data for iPhoto.

Nokia is using the 3D map service of C3 Technologies, but is paying Apple for the license. Nokia also uses Navteq for map data. TomTom since has confirmed Apple is licensing its data.

However, the biggest feature for many users will be turn-by-turn navigation from the app or the lock screen, the ability to get a "Quick Route" button on search results, and directions from Siri. There's an "are we there yet?" command and the ability to use Siri for directions. There's also an estimated time arrival permanently displayed, and the app "has a look and feel much more elegant than any existing GPS software we've seen before" according to The Verge. At the top of the app are signs resembling road signs, which shows the distance left before the end of the journey or before the next turning. The app also turns automatically so the user is always forward-facing.

It means, somewhat ironically, users won't have to buy the expensive TomTom apps from the App Store.
