Meebo, the developers of the self-named popular IM service, has announced it will be acquired by Google. The fee paid by Google hasn't been revealed, but All Things D reported the figure could be around $100 million.

"We are happy to announce that Meebo has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Google!

"For more than seven years we've been helping publishers find deeper relationships with their users and to make their sites more social and engaging. Together with Google, we're super jazzed to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to helps users and websites owners alike.

"We've had a blast building Meebo so far and we're really excited to start the next leg of our journey," the company announced on its official blog.

All Things D reported on May 11, 2012 the service was looking to be acquired by Google for $100 million. The service was founded in 2005 by Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg, CTO Sandy Jen and advisor Elaine Jerry. It launched the Web-based Meebo Messenger, and the Meebo Bar for consistent sharing.

"We are always looking for better ways to help users to share content and connect with others across the web, just as they do in real life. With the Meebo team's expertise in social publishers tools, we believe they will be a great fit with the Google+ team. We looking forward to closing the transaction and working with the Meebo team to create more ways to engage more users online," a Google spokesperson said. The statement seems to suggest the personnel will be integrated into Google, rather than keeping the Meebo team separate.

Meebo has also raised funding in the past, over $60 million, with $25 million in coming 2010 from Khosla Ventures.

Whether the acquisition will end well for Meebo is a question of time, but the statement suggests Google will be adopting the company's service for Google Plus integration or may remove the services entirely if it conflicts with Google's services. The Meebo IM app on smartphones is free to download and use.
