Since Facebook originally acquired the Kickstarter company, Oculus, for $2 billion back in 2014, the company has thus far been busy trying to integrate its social media prowess into virtual reality. Now, the company has launched two new features for Oculus made for the Samsung Gear VR, which encourages users to interact with their friends in a virtually created space.
The first new feature that was introduced is a system called "Parties". This feature is essentially a simple chat system, which is commonly found on gaming consoles such as the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. With the new system however, players can initiate a conversation with other people using the VR headset.
The next feature is called "Rooms", which works together with the chat system for users to interact with people in a virtual living space. Players who enter the same virtual living space will be transported to a living room complete with a television, which can be used to stream videos; and a table that contains simple games, which can be played with different players who are online.
Players within the room may also launch different multiplayer Gear VR apps and experiences to share with other users. This system essentially gives players, who are not in the same physical area, a chance to interact with one another as if they were in the same room. Facebook also revealed that Oculus will now feature an option that allows its users to launch Facebook live right within the virtual space, thus allowing them to share their virtual experience via the Facebook mobile app.
As for the experience itself, within the virtual space, users will be represented by an avatar, similar to the one featured in the Oculus Connect event back in October. A user's photo, grabbed from the user's Facebook profile, will also be floating below the character's head to further indicate the avatar's identity. The entire system is still somewhat rudimentary and users will likely not jump into the experience right away, but the move is a big one in terms of making VR a mainstream experience.
