Geoff Keighley's comments on no Unreal Engine 4 support for the Wii U have been confirmed by the developer. Epic Games, who owns the engine, said the engine is only confirmed for PC.

Keighley, who will be conducting interviews and hosting shows at E3 2012 as part of Spike TV, said on Twitter originally that "Spike [TV] will be unveiling Unreal Engine 4 during E3!" Following the comment, a Twitter user messaged Keighley, asking if the demo was a tech demo like that shown at Game Developers Conference 2012 or an interactive demo. Keighley said everything was in real time, with "interactive prototypes." The demo was confirmed to be the GDC demo with added elements.

When the tech demo was shown at E3 2012, it was for the press only. Epic since said it would go public, and has released screenshots of the footage which showed a demon lord-esque character and a vista of mountains.

It was after the original tweets that Keighley confirmed the lack of Wii U support, saying it will only run Unreal Engine 3 (the engine used for this generation of consoles).

Epic Games also confirmed to NowGamer that the company "has yet to confirm which platforms Unreal Engine 4 will be compatible with - other than PC." The Web site sent an e-mail to Epic; the company said PC is the only confirmed platform. Microsoft and Sony have not announced the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but it could be a surprise if the engine doesn't support those next-gen consoles.

Epic previously said the engine was running on systems it couldn't name, hinting at Microsoft's and Sony's upcoming consoles.

It also suggests the Wii U's specs are not significantly higher than the current HD consoles, which run Unreal Engine 3. Previous rumors on the Wii U's capabilities have been conflicting, with some suggesting the console is on the same level of power as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 while others - such as Gearbox - claimed it's more powerful.

"This isn't new news guys. When I interviewed Mike Capps at GDC for GTTV, I asked him on camera about whether UE4 was targeted for the Wii-U, and he said no, UE3 is more in line with Wii-U ... That's all I was referring to in the @ reply," Keighley posted on gaming forum NeoGAF.
