Compared to the previous game, trying to lay siege on a city in "Civilization VI" proves to be a lot harder than before. If you just try to attack without strategy, you might find yourself scratching in the head and wonder why your units get obliterated in an instant. Apolon's guide teaches us how to properly coordinate a siege attack and eventually conquer your enemy.

Understand how walls work

Having an understanding of the walls will greatly influence the outcome of your siege, preparing with this in mind will raise your success rate. The key here is to know what units are best suited for damaging these walls. According to Apolon, Regular units can't do much damage to the walls, even the range units, which only does half damage.

You'll want to bring siege units in order to deal significant damage to the walls. These units include catapults, industrial-era bombards, artillery, and rocket artillery. Once these walls start to crumble, your artillery units will be doing damage to the city itself and will leave you with a chance for your other units to attack.

Another thing you might want to take note of is, walls don't regenerate their health on their own. Cities are able to repair their walls only if that wall haven't taken any damage in at least three turns. This means that all those damage you did will accumulate and you can just take your sweet time tearing them down.

City health

However, Apolon notes that when it comes to Cities, their health regenerate a small amount each turn unless the city is under siege - which occurs when every tile adjacent of the city is under the attacker's direct control or zone-of-control. It is also worth noting the encampment districts have walls and health of their own so you might want to take them out as well unless you want to be continuously attacked while trying to conquer the city.

Support units

There are two support units which will help your city sieges to be successful - these are the Battering Ram, and Siege Tower. Battering Rams enables your unit to directly and effectively attack walls which will make attacking the city easier after the wall is destroyed. Siege Towers enable the units to attack the city directly even if the walls are not torn down yet.

Battering Rams needs to be used if your strategy is to make a big city siege once the wall breaks down. Meanwhile, Siege Towers can also be effective if you have a large army but only have a few siege units.

With this knowledge in mind, we hope you conquer a lot of cities in "Civilization VI." Stay tuned for more guides on "Civilization VI."
