Minecraft, which released on the Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Arcade May 9, has broken the record for digital sales. The title has sold a million copies, breaking Trials Evolution's record in the process.

The XBLA version came around five months after the PC's version 1.0 release, and cost 1600MSP ($20). The console version supports offline and online multiplayer, with four player split-screen multiplayer also available.

Microsoft revealed 5.2 million hours have been logged thus far. Four million multiplayer sessions have been played, with 2.4 million hours spent in multiplayer. The game also sold 400,000 copies in the first 24 hours from launch, making it the fastest selling game ever on XBLA. The PC version has sold millions of copies evening resulting in the creation of "Minecon," a conference dedicated to Minecraft.

Minecraft is built around survival, dropping players in a randomly generated world with no items and supplies. It's up to the player to find out how to survive before night falls, and enemies appear.

The Xbox 360 version is about a year old compared to the PC build, but the game's creator Markus Persson hopes frequent updates will arrive to bring the two versions closer together.

The console version also brings built-in solutions for every item that can be crafted. In the PC version, players have to figure out the solutions: putting two sticks and stone in the shape in a horizontal line, for example, creates a sword.

The PC version of the game was a hit before it was officially released, debuting in May 17, 2009. A beta release arrived a year later. The 1.0 release arrived in November 2011, marking Notch's move away to develop other projects. His studio - Mojang - is still supporting the game, though.

iOS and Android apps are available - called Minecraft: Pocket Edition - after exclusively being available for the Xperia Play and Android. Some differences between the PC and mobile versions are a finite world, no visible sky, and survival mode only featuring zombies as an enemy.

"Uhhhh, Microsoft just sent out a press release saying Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold a million copies in five days. Wow.

"I feel stunned," Persson said on Twitter.
