With outdoor sports and adventures exciting a major audience, the need for an action camera is also surfacing. GoPro is already a renowned name in the market, but how will it fare against Xiaomi, a lesser-known brand in action camera field?

Here is a quick comparison of the GoPro Hero 5 and Xiaomi Yi 4k Action camera.

Both are 12 megapixel cameras. GoPro boast its Snapdragon 800 chipset while Yi comes with Ambarella chipset for its main processor. The Yi model includes a Sony IMX377 12-megapixel camera capable of shooting 4k video at 30 to 120 frames per second with the ability to capture time-lapse videos.. GoPro also offers 4k video with the potential to boost it to 8k, but only shoots from 30 to 60 frames per second.

In terms of working hours, the Yi 4K from Xiaomi offers more with 1400 mAH battery compared to GoPro Hero 5's 1160 mAh.

Hero 5 comes in two different versions with the priciest one having a touch screen. The Hero 5 boasts electronic stabilization, a first for the leader in action cameras. Additionally, the Hero 5 offers voice control which is handy especially if you're in the middle of some death defying stunt.

The biggest advantage that the Hero5 Black (and session) have over the YI 4K is their ability to go underwater without a case. If you want to use the YI 4K underwater, you'll need one.

The Hero 5 Black (with touch screen) comes at $399. While, the Xiaomi action camera is a very good camera with a price tag of $250.

Now, if you're planning on using the camera over bumpy terrain the electronic stabilization of the Hero 5 is likely worth the extra cost and also you can shoot better audio underwater videos with Hero 5.

In short, Xiaomi is worth the money for an action camera, except you don't need your camera in the above two conditions.
