Citing trusted sources, 9to5mac has reported that Apple is going to replace Google Maps with its own map service. As part of the service, Apple will roll out a 3D mode that promises to be "mind-blowing."

The Google Maps replacement will launch in iOS 6, which is expected to be revealed during WWDC from June 11-15. 9to5mac said the service will be designed similarly to Google maps but will be faster, cleaner and more reliable.

The backend will also be Apple's, which previously belonged to Google despite Apple having full control over the app. The purchase of three mapping technologies - Placebase, CD Technologies and Ply 9 - are all part of the map service. The 3D technology is likely because of the acquisition of CD Technologies, which led to the "mind-blowing" comment.

"C3 technologies is the leading provider of 3D mapping solutions, offering photo-realistic models of the world for search, navigation and and geographic information systems ... The Sweden-based company's automated software and advanced algorithms enable C3 to rapidly assemble extremely precise 3D models, and seamlessly integrate them with traditional 2D maps, satellite images, street level photography and user generated images," the company said.

The 3D technology can be turned on and off, and offers realistic graphics based on de-classified missile target algorithms.

The application is being referred to as "Maps." Before the launch of iOS 5, the Google Maps contract was extended, but the contract is slated to end around the launch of iOS 6.

9to5mac also reported that the logo for app will be redesigned, which is apparently a variant of the current iOS icon and will feature Apple's 1 Infinite Loop Campus with a different color scheme. Apple's acquisition of C3 technologies will also mean a replacement of Street View will launch.

9to5mac previously reported on the inclusion of Siri - Apple's voice recognition technology - in the iPhone 4S.

Source speaking to AllThingsD also confirmed the map app, which will "blow your heads off." The source didn't expand on the phrase, but the 3D technology sounds like a significant departure from that in Google Maps.
