The new "Death Note" movie, "Death Note Light up The NEW World," steals the crown from Makoto Shinkai's critically acclaimed animation film "Kimi no Na wa," bagging the top spot in Japan's Box Office this week.
The newest film, which is based on the popular manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, has taken the number one spot this weekend in Japan, pushing Shinkai's film to number two.
The latest live action adaptation of "Death Note" is the sequel to the 2006 movie "Death Note 2: The Last Name," and is directed by "Gantz" director Shinsuke Sato. Ten years after the events of "The Last Name," the Death Note has continued to claim victims after a long hiatus, and a virus named "Kira" points out that there are now six Death Notes in existence, and anyone who collects all Notes will take over the world.
The movie stars Masahiro Higashide ("Parasyte: Parts 1 & 2") as Tsukuru Mishima, an investigator pursuing the Death Notes, Masaki Suda ("Kamen Rider W," "Assassination Classroom") as Yuki Shien, a Kira worshipper and cyber terrrorist, Sousuke Ikematsu ("The Last Samurai") as L's successor Ryuzaki, and Rina Kawaei (former AKB48 member) as Sakura Aoi, another Kira worshipper and the deadliest Death Note user in existence.
Meanwhile, "Kimi no Na wa" is gearing for a North American release, and renowned American entertainment and anime licensing company FUNimation has acquired U.S. rights to the animation film.
As per Anime News Network, the hit anime film, also known as "Your Name.", is aiming for a qualification for next year's Academy Awards, or Oscars. In order to be considered for the prestigious awarding ceremony, a film is required to be shown in any theater in Los Angeles for at least a week.
FUNimation is also planning a digital release for the film, shortly after its North American theater run.
It is not yet confirmed if "Death Note Light up The NEW World" will get an international release in the future.
