Makoto Shinkai's animated film masterpiece "Kimi no Na wa," or "Your Name," has made waves in its home country of Japan, but will it be good enough to topple the biggest Disney animated movies and bag the Oscar?
The critically acclaimed anime movie is officially on the consideration list for the 89th Academy Awards, according to Rocket News 24, and will be pitted against this year's top Disney blockbuster movies.
"Your Name." is a huge hit in Japan, and is currently on the top spot in Japanese box office, despite being shown in theaters since August.
On the other hand, fims from Disney/Pixar and Disney Animation Studios were always top contenders in the Academy Awards, and has won eight Oscars for the past ten years with animation gems "Brave," "Frozen," "Toy Story 3," "Up," Rattatouille," WALL-E," "Big Hero 6" and "Inside Out."
For the 89th Academy Awards, Disney/Pixar is bringing out box office hit movie "Zootopia" as its frontrunner for the Best Animated Movie award. Also in the list are "Finding Dory" and upcoming movie "Moana."
Studio Ghibli is also hoping to end its Oscar win drought with "The Red Turtle," a French-Belgian-Japanese animated film in collaboration with Dutch animator and director Michael Dudok de Wit. The last time Studio Ghibli went home with the Oscar was in 2002, when Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" won the trophy.
