Sony has for quite some time been a decent challenger to Apple in terms of smartphones and wearables. Here, we took a quick look at the Sony Smartwatch 3 and the Apple Watch Series 2 to settle a score in the smartwatch market.

We see many similar specs over all the Android Wear smartwatches with a couple of little differences here and there. The SmartWatch 3 has a 1.6in LCD Transflective screen, IP68 rating, GPS and a microUSB port. Rather than AMOLED or IPS, Sony has gone for transflective which implies the display is still coherent - given adequate light - without the backdrop illumination. There is a 420mAh battery. It also comes with an ambient light sensor.

The 320x320 display seems to have a greater number of pixels than the other watches in that range.

The 38mm Apple Watch Series 2 has a 272 × 340 display, which makes for a 290ppi pixel thickness. The 42mm Apple Watch Series 2 has a 302ppi pixel thickness, with a 312 × 390 display.

Apple puts its particular S2 chip in action as a part of the Watch Series 2. It has a capacity of 8GB. However, you can only allot 2GB for music and only 75 MB for photographs. Apple doesn't cite RAM, but we it may have it as 1GB, up from 512MB in the first Apple Watch. It underpins Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, as well. There's a heart-rate sensor, an accelerometer and support for remote charging.

Besides GPS, the Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant. It's evaluated to survive up to 50m under ISO standard 22810:2010.

The SmartWatch 3 has the most extreme IP rating: IP68. That implies it's clean tight and can survive fluid submersion past 1m.

The Sony Smartwatch 3 is less expensive, so if sparing cash is your thing, you have to keep away from Apple.

The normal model Sony SmartWatch 3 was at first recorded at £199 but go to PC World, Currys or Dixons and you can get one now for just £99.99. It is also up on Amazon. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 2 begins at £369, and gets higher for its upper models, based on build materials.
