Just a few days ago, fans and consumers hungrily waiting for GoPro's Karma Drone finally got the release date through the product's official unveiling. However, DJI doesn't seem to be slacking off as the company also launched Karma's potential match, the DJI Mavic Pro.
Reviews have already started spewing on the internet regarding both the GoPro Karma Drone and DJI Mavic Pro. Here are some of both's high and low points when compared with each other (via Petapixel.)
Weight
The weight of the Mavic Pro is just around 1.62lbs or simply 734kgs. The Karma weighs somewhere around 2.22lbs and is almost twice as heavy. In this department, the clear winner would be the DJI Mavic Pro, but for certain users, that extra weight may be of use, so it could be subjective.
Portability
Both of the drones can be easily folded for maximum portability, but the DJI Mavic Pro gets the advantage by becoming even more smaller due to its extra foldability with the propellers. In this regards, the clear winner would be the DJI Mavic Pro.
Speed and Flight Time
While not entirely something to write home about, the Mavic Pro can fly slight faster than the Karma Drone by about 10kph more. The same goes for the flight time as both barely reaches the 30-minute mark.
Maximum Distance
A department where the DJI Mavic Pro screams "winner." The Karma Drone can only fly about 1km away from the remote controller. The Mavic goes seven times further than this.
Camera
The Mavic Pro has its own built-in camera while the Karma Drone uses a GoPro HERO5 one. Both cameras uses a 1 / 2.3 -inch, 12 megapixel CMOS sensors. Both can capture JPEG and RAW stills as well as record 4K videos.
There's no footage to compare the two as of yet, but once released, consumers will find out eventually.
Price
One of the most important aspect is the price and it leans on the DJI Mavic Pro that only costs $749 for the drone that can be controlled with a smartphone or a $1,000 bundle that includes the controller.
The Karma Drone itself costs $799 and this includes the controller. However, a separate purchase of camera is needed and the GoPro HERO5 costs $400, making the bundle go around $1.199.
Takeaways
At this point, it would seem like the DJI Mavic Pro is getting all the advantages over the GoPro Karma Drone and the only possible saving grace the the latter could have is the video quality, which we'll see soon enough.
