A new slide allegedly leaked from an HP presentation gives a first peek at what seems to be HP's first Windows 8 business-focused tablet. According to the slide which first appeared on Neowin, the HP Slate 8 will be a 10.1-inch, 9.2mm thick, 1.5-pound tablet, with eight to ten hours of battery life, some sort of docking station, optional pen-based input, an outdoor viewing option and a range business-friendly security features.

Rumors of an upcoming HP Windows 8 tablet first surfaced back in February. Reports indicate the HP tablet will run an x86 processor, and will arrive at the end of the year. Conveniently enough, that is also when Windows 8 is supposed to launch.

Enterprise Functionality

The HP Slate 8 will come with enterprise functionality and Windows 8 Professional, complete with touch controls. The tablet is featured in a slide which also shows an EliteBook, indicating that the HP Slate 8 could enter the Elite line of HP products, HP's highest-level consumer line of products.

The HP Slate 8 has a number of security features including HP ProtectTools, TPM embedded security, as well as support for Computrace, should someone lose the unit. The portable HP tablet with 8-10 hours of battery life seems to have a full aluminum body. Compared to the iPad, it has a slightly bigger skin and a slimmer body.

HP Win 8 Tablet by the End of 2012

An HP Intel-based Windows 8 tablet comes as no great surprise, as CEO Meg Whitman said earlier this year that HP was working on it, noting that the tablet would be unveiled before the end of the year. The Neowin slide, however, offers a more detailed view of what to expect.

It is not certain at this point whether the leak is genuine or not. CNet's Mary Jo Foley could not confirm nor deny it, but tends to believe it is real. "After a bit of investigation, I am inclined to believe this is a real mock-up and is part of HP's line up of business desktops and laptops it will be taunting this year," Foley wrote. She asked HP to comment on the slide, but HP declined to comment. "We don't comment on rumors or speculation," an HP spokesperson reportedly replied.
