Twitter has updated its app for iOS and Android devices, bringing improvements to search, notifications and discovering content. The update reflects the redesign the Web version of Twitter experienced.

For discovering content, Twitter has introduced the Discover tab. The Discover tab helps to find "interesting and timely content that matters," and allows users to see Activity.

"Activity is a stream of updates that shows which Tweets are favorited or retweeted by the people you follow and which accounts those people follow or add to lists," the company said in the blog post covering the update.

Activity appears below stories in the Discover tab, and tapping news stories once shows Tweets about a particular trend or news article. Users can reply to, retweet or favorite related Tweets.

Search has also been reconfigured in the apps. Different spellings and related terms for queries will be shown. The Connect tab has also been modified, as users can type first names, last names or usernames when looking for users. Names autocomplete for followed users.

For the iPhone apps specifically, tapping the search box in the Discover tab shows the most recent queries. Users can access someone's profile when searching for a username in Connect.

Notifications now include push notifications, which shows when a Tweet has been retweeted or made favorite or when users gain a new follower. Push notifications can be managed in the settings menu of the app.

Twitter previously redesigned the service online, introducing three buttons: the Home button, which shows the timeline of Tweets for users followed; the Connect button shows replies and new followers, along with Mentions; finally, Discover shows "Stories" and the ability to view Tweets about stories based on users' activity on the service.

In the redesign, the profile was also reworked: it shows the total number of Tweets, Followers and users followed at the top. The right-hand side shows recent activity, while the left-hand side shows other information such as Favorites, Lists and Recent Images.

The updated apps are available on the App Store and Google Play.
