Sony's latest gaming handheld, the Playstation Vita, might not be runaway hit like the Nintendo 3DS, but unlike that device, the Vita is getting some cool apps. Skype has made its way to Sony's little critter, and it has some nice features that will hopefully get users to use the device some more since there are no games worth playing. Did I just say the Vita has no games? You better believe it.
With Skype for Vita, users can make voice and video calls over WiFi and 3G. Video calls are possible due to the Vita's back and front facing cameras. We only hope the quality is good enough.
What we like about Skype for Vita, is the ability to run the application in the background, take a call while you are in the middle of a game or whatever else, which kind of sets the Vita along the lines of a smartphone, and which isn't a bad thing. If it all works out well as it states on paper, Sony could create its own ecosystem of apps with the Vita, but somehow we doubt Sony will use the opportunity, even if it is screaming at the company front center.
The app seems to work well according to the press release video below, but we would like to see something being done by consumers instead to have a better idea on how well Skype works on the Vita.
Skype for the PlayStation Vita is available for download from April 25 2012, from the PS Store. We're not sure if it will be available to every country, so keep an eye out.
